The Winter 2022 SOMED Newsletter marks the return of the Society’s newsletter following a period of reduced activity and highlights important developments within the Society for Microbial Ecology and Disease.
This issue reflects on the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the continuing importance of scientific societies in disseminating reliable scientific knowledge, and SOMED’s commitment to supporting researchers and advancing microbial ecology.
Society Updates
During the preceding years, SOMED introduced several important developments aimed at modernising the Society and strengthening its international scientific activities.
- New bylaws were approved in 2019 as part of the Society’s official registration in France.
- A new SOMED website was launched in 2020 to strengthen communication, share Society news and attract new members.
- A new Board and Council were elected to lead the Society into its next period of activity.

41st SOMED Congress
The newsletter also announces the return of SOMED’s face-to-face scientific meetings with the 41st SOMED Congress, hosted by Professor Eugenia Bezirtzoglou in Alexandroupolis, Greece.
