SOMED Newsletter – September 2017

The September 2017 SOMED Newsletter presents updates from the Society for Microbial Ecology and Disease, including a review of the 39th SOMED Annual Meeting in Japan, developments concerning the Society’s journal, plans for future SOMED congresses and a selection of upcoming international microbiome meetings.

39th SOMED Annual Meeting in Tokyo

The newsletter opens with a message from SOMED President Prof. Eugenia Bezirtzoglou and a review of the 39th SOMED Annual Meeting, held at Tokyo Garden Palace in Ochanomizu, Japan, from 7–10 June 2017.

The meeting was organised jointly with the 19th International Symposium on Gnotobiology (XIX ISG) and the 50th Congress of the Japanese Association of Germfree Life and Gnotobiology (L JAGG).

SOMED expressed its appreciation to its Japanese colleagues for the opportunity to co-organise the meeting and for their hospitality, as well as to SOMED members who contributed to the organisation and presented their scientific work through oral presentations and posters.

Scientific Exchange and Journal Update

The congress featured scientific interaction, presentations and round-table discussions covering subjects related to microbial ecology, gnotobiology and health and disease.

The newsletter also announced the appointment of Prof. Betty Theriault and Dr. Jorgen Valeur as joint Editors-in-Chief of Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease, with responsibility for basic biological and clinical articles respectively.

Future SOMED Meetings

Planning for future scientific meetings was also an important part of the Society’s activities.

The newsletter announced that the 40th SOMED Annual Meeting would be hosted by Prof. Alojz Bomba in Budapest, Hungary, from 18–21 June 2018.

The Board also discussed potential locations for the 2019 meeting and plans to organise the 2020 SOMED meeting jointly with the 20th International Symposium on Gnotobiology.

Upcoming Microbiome Meetings

The newsletter includes information about a number of international scientific meetings and congresses scheduled for 2017 and 2018, reflecting SOMED’s wider engagement with the international microbiome and microbial ecology research community.

Events highlighted include meetings in Berlin, Copenhagen, Atlanta, Budapest, Las Vegas, Banff, Paris, Killarney and Heidelberg.
